2021 Hyundai Kona
Although the subcompact crossover SUV segment has a number of options available, the Kona has surged ahead to become one of the leaders in the class. This model from Hyundai has several appealing features and options that make it powerful, responsive, and downright fun to drive.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2021 Hyundai Kona is available in six trim levels: the SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Night, Limited, and Ultimate. On the outside, the base SE trim shows off automatic projector-beam headlights, LED daytime running lights, and 16-inch alloy wheels. The SEL offers larger 17-inch wheels, roof rails, heated side mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators, rear privacy glass, a power sunroof, and keyless entry and ignition. Opting for the SEL Plus adds fog lights.
Want your vehicle to stand out even more? Then, check out the sleek and stylish Night model featuring black exterior trim elements, LED headlights, and a unique set of 18-inch black-painted wheels. Standard exterior equipment on the Limited trim includes LED headlights and taillights and 18-inch wheels. At the top of the list, the Ultimate trim boasts automatic windshield wipers and high-beam assist.
Engine (Power)
The SE, SEL, and SEL Plus come equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine — paired with a six-speed automatic transmission — rated at 132 pound-feet of torque and 147 horsepower. In contrast, the upper three trims sport the more powerful 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that supplies 195 pound-feet of torque and 175 horsepower. This unit is matched with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available as an upgrade across all six trim levels.
Performance
For better acceleration, choose any trim level that includes the turbocharged engine as it's a bit peppier than the 2.0-liter unit. Still, both powertrains are efficient and consistent, ensuring the Kona's handling is smooth. Many buyers choose to upgrade to Hyundai's AWD system, as it offers extra traction in various driving conditions as well as a multi-link suspension beam to boost handling and ride quality.
Interior
Even the base model of the 2021 Hyundai Kona comes well equipped, offering a surprisingly spacious seating area and plenty of comfort and tech features. These include cloth upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, a six-speaker sound system, and a 7-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. The SEL trim adds heated front seats, satellite and HD Radio, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Go for the SEL Plus for additional conveniences like a power driver's seat, a premium eight-speaker sound system, wireless charging, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
Stepping up to the Night model adds the same features as the SEL Plus and more. With the Limited trim, you get leather upholstery and automatic climate control. But the most luxurious in the lineup is the Ultimate, which has integrated navigation and an 8-inch touch screen.
Safety Features
Every 2021 Hyundai Kona comes with advanced airbags throughout the cabin, a rearview camera, anti-lock brakes, tire pressure monitoring, stability, and traction control, lane-keep assist, forward collision-avoidance assist, and a driver attention warning system. The upper five trims also have blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while the top trim includes rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and a head-up display.
