2020 Hyundai Kona
Across the board, the 2020 Hyundai Kona is a well-designed, spacious, and fun-to-drive choice for its compact SUV category. With a variety of trim levels, each offering a different combination of features, there's a Kona out there for everyone.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2020 Kona comes in five trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, and Ultimate. Every trim level includes standard front-wheel drive and the option to upgrade to all-wheel drive.
The base SE trim offers a nice package of standard features, including keyless entry, alloy wheels, and a backup camera. The SEL trim includes additional features like a roof rack and blind-spot monitoring, and the move up to the SEL Plus adds a sunroof and additional tech features.
In the upper trim levels, the Limited includes LED head and taillights, an upgraded exterior look, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Finally, the top-of-the-line Ultimate comes with a host of convenience features like rear parking sensors and a head-up display.
Engine (Power)
The 2020 Kona comes with two engine options — one for the SE, SEL, and SEL Plus trims, and one for the top-level Limited and Ultimate trims. The SE, SEL, and SEL Plus all come standard with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed automatic transmission, 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. This engine is a bit sluggish, only going from zero to 60 in 9.2 seconds.
The Limited and Ultimate models receive an upgrade with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with seven-speed automatic transmission, 175 horsepower, and 195 pound-feet of torque. The turbo definitely adds some punch, getting the 2020 Kona from zero to 60 in 6.6 seconds.
Performance
No matter which engine the Kona has, it's a fun car to drive. Its compact size makes it more maneuverable than other, larger SUVs, and it offers accurate and substantial handling, which makes driving down those twisty backcountry roads a blast. However, the suspension leaves something to be desired, and it may be a bit less comfortable on uneven terrain. It has a decent fuel economy for its class, getting 27-28 mpg in the city and 32-33 on the highway, depending on the engine.
Interior
The 2020 Kona's interior is friendly and welcoming while still feeling sophisticated. While it is a compact SUV, seating and storage are ample, providing a comfortable ride for passengers with plenty of storage space for luggage or cargo.
The dash features a minimalist view of buttons and gauges with a seven-inch infotainment screen in the four lowest trims and an eight-inch screen in the Ultimate. All trim levels come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and the top-level Ultimate offers a head-up display. Overall, the infotainment system is very intuitive and easy to use, with convenient features like pinch-to-zoom functionality.
Safety Features
The 2020 Kona does not skimp on safety. A variety of useful safety features come standard with all models, including emergency braking, lane keep assistance, a backup camera, and forward-collision warning. A variety of optional upgrades are available as well, like automatic high beam headlights, rear parking sensors, pedestrian detection, and blind-spot monitoring. The Ultimate trim also includes adaptive cruise control.
